Ingredients

by Allergy Guy

Most food that you eat is a combination of ingredients. In terms of both allergies and health, it is well worth paying attention to those ingredients.

Of course you will want to scan lists of ingredients for foods you are allergic to, for example wheat or milk. Also, some foods are more healthy than others. In general, the more preventives, food-colouring, salt and sugar in the food, the less healthy the food. In most cases, a long list of ingredients indicates junk food. Sometimes, most or all of the ingredients are food, but most of the time, a long list contains mostly chemicals.

The goal of this section is to provide information about various food ingredients mentioned on this site.

Mold Allergy Overview

by Allergy Guy

Moldy nectarinesI have been working on a new section for this website about mold. Some mold is useful, for example blue cheese would be neither blue nor tasty without the right kind of mold. Other types of mold are toxic, and should be avoided by everyone. The worst kinds of molds are carcinogenic, for example, some varieties that commonly grow on peanuts, and other types that commonly grow on damp wood.

Understanding mold, where it grows, and which types are especially harmful is useful information for everyone.

Fatigue

by Allergy Guy

Fatigue is often described as a lack of energy, a weariness from mental or physical exertion.

It can be an allergy symptom. It may also be caused by a combination of other factors. Certainly, if you can get more of a handle on fatigue, your allergy symptoms will likely lessen in severity.

From a holistic perspective, fatigue can also be perceived as a message from our bodies. It is often a symptom of imbalance. Therefore, when experiencing fatigue, it’s important to ask, why am I feeling so tired?

  • Am I getting enough quality sleep? For example, many people get 8 hours of sleep a night, but wake up 2-3 times during the night. This can lead to feelings of sluggishness during the day.
    • If you are not getting enough sleep, why not? Are you doing too much? Is something bothering you where you don’t feel able to relax and sleep well?
    • Conversely, getting too much sleep can actually also lead to sluggishness. Oversleeping can be a sign of imbalance as well.
  • Am I nourishing myself enough – physically, emotionally, mentally?
    • Physically – Am I eating foods that give me the proper nutrients and energy to keep me going? Eating well balanced meals with fresh food will give you the most sustainable energy throughout the day. A diet consisting of a lot of processed foods will drain and deplete your body of minerals and nutrients. Sometimes food or other allergies can also lead to symptoms of fatigue.
    • Emotionally – How are my relationships, career, spirituality? Feeling fulfilled in these areas is important in our overall well-being. On the other hand, emotional stress can drain our energy and make us feel tired.
    • Mentally – Am I involved in challenging, invigorating, fun activities to stimulate the mind and create excitement in my life? If you are involved in things that make you excited to jump out of bed every morning, chances are you will experience much less fatigue than if you woke up every morning feeling as though you had to drag yourself to get through the day.

Addressing the above questions can be extremely effective in addressing fatigue from a holistic perspective. It is important to listen to our body’s messages and understand the root causes of fatigue.

Carcinogenic

Carcinogenic

Carcinogenic

Carcinogenic means cancer-causing. This is not directly related to allergies, but it is related to some allergens, especially some types of toxic mold.

People with celiac disease are prone to an increased incidense of bowel cancer if they ingest gluten.

Mould

What Is Mold?

hyphae-PenicilliumMolds are a type of fungus. Larger fungi include mushrooms. Molds are multicelled, as opposed to yeast which is single-celled.

Molds grow in a network of branching filaments, called hyphae. Groups or colonies of hyphae are called mycelium.

Mold species are found in a number of taxonomic divisions, so different species of mold may not be as closely related as you think.

No one really knows how many species of mold exist. Estimates are in the hundreds of thousands of species. Some are harmless, some useful and edible. Toxic mold on the other hand, is a real health problem, and some mold is carcinogenic.

Yeast Infection

by Allergy Guy

Yeast infections go beyond the scope of allergies, the main focus of this site, so this article is for reference only.

A yeast infection is an overgrowth of candida (a strain of yeast) in some part of the body. Some level of candida growth in the body is normal, for example on the skin, in the mouth, diaper rash etc. Yeast is normally held in check can get by other microoganisms which also live harmlessly in the body. When their population declines, yeast over-growth can occur.
