Avoiding gluten is a real struggle: we are used to eating wheat-based foods – it seems like almost everything is either made of wheat, or has wheat in it. This isn’t really true of course, but when you are trying to avoid gluten, that’s all you see everywhere: wheat, barley, oats and rye as far as the eye can see!
I’ll tell you about a method I have used to avoid gluten and stay on a gluten-free diet.
The first thing to understand when avoiding a food is that you can’t not eat wheat! How do you not do something? By asking yourself that question, you are already at a disadvantage.
Instead, you need to do a food substitution in your head.
Every time you think “wheat”, or “bread”, or “cookie” or whatever, you need to replace that thought with a gluten-free alternative.
This is easier than it has ever been. Now you can think “gluten-free bread” instead of bread or “gluten-fee cookies” instead of “cookies” – and go out and buy them in the store.
The real secret to success is to have gluten free foods on hand. Think about what you can eat, and have a good store of raw ingredients to make your own gluten free food, and some prepared gluten free snacks for those times when you are too hungry to think.
You will have better luck if you can eliminate all gluten-containing foods from your house and replace all of it with food you can eat. If this is not possible because of who you share your house with, then at least have gluten-free cupboard just for you, that you can open and be inspired by.
The key to starting a gluten free diet it to replace the thought “no gluten” with thoughts about specific gluten-free foods you can eat. You will find many ideas on this and other gluten-free websites on the internet.
