Wasabi is an essential side dish for sushi. It should be gluten-free, but at some restaurants, it is reported to have gluten in it.
There are actually two main types of wasabi: real wasabi (which is very rare, especially outside of Japan), and fake wasabi, which is what most people come across, most of the time.
This has important implications for allergies in general, and gluten allergy or celiac disease in particular.

Gluten Free Garage is a gluten free fair held on Sunday, 11 November 2012. It is a showcase for 45 Toronto-area vendors of gluten-free food.
If you have a gluten allergy or celiac disease, then you have to avoid all gluten. Period. This doesn’t sound easy. For those with long experience at avoiding gluten, it isn’t too bad, but it is still troublesome, and we must always be on our guard. This gives all food-oriented events a background of stress, except when we make our own food with known ingredients, or eat the food made by trusted individuals or restaurants etc.

Kami Sushi on Roncensvalles in Toronto is a great place for sushi, with mostly gluten-free options and a caring staff.
Kami Sushi is one of my favorite places for sushi in Toronto. The quality of the fish is excellent, and they somehow manage to wrap the rolls in a thin layer of rice about two grains thick. They are obviously very skilled.
They also have gluten-free soy sauce for people with gluten allergy or celiac, which is great. [click to continue…]

Butler’s Pantry does have some gluten free options, but it is not the best choice if you have a gluten allergy unfortunately.
It is a funky, relaxed restaurant and tea house on Roncesvalles Ave. in Toronto. It is a nice place to hang out. The mismatched furniture and large array of different tea pots adds charm to the place. If you’re in a casual mood, you would probably want to eat here if you’re in the area.

South Indian food is a good choice for a gluten free diet, but the Rashnaa is not a good choice for either quality food or gluten free.
While those with a gluten allergy or celiac disease can eat here, it does not have the unfettered range of choices that a genuine South Indian restaurant should have. [click to continue…]

Gluten free restaurants in Toronto. This section lists restaurants that have a reliable section of gluten free dishes.
More and more restaurants are gluten-aware, but not all restaurants really get it, and some have more choices of gluten-free food than others. If you have celiac disease or a gluten allergy, you need to know where to go and where to avoid.
This list of restaurants has been started with places I have personally ate at. I don’t like all of them. I will tell you what I like and what I don’t like.
They do not necessarily cater to the gluten free diet. I indicate how easy or difficult it is to get gluten-free food from them. There is some risk to your gluten free diet at restaurants that do not cater specifically to the gluten-free diet.
I will tell you which are good for a gluten free diet, and which are not. I will also give you my opinion of the food quality. If I have not personally eaten at a restaurant, it is marked with an asterisk.
Feel free to make your own suggestions: leave a comment with your favourite gluten-free restaurants, and I’ll check them out.

South Indian food is mostly gluten-free if made properly. The Madreas Masala restaurant is a great choice for gluten free South Indian food in Toronto.
Most Indian restaurants are really North Indian food. They usually have good gluten-free options as well. South Indian food is harder to find. With fewer choices, I was very pleased to discover an excellent South Indian restaurant in Toronto. [click to continue…]
