Mango allergy problems are caused by a reaction to Urushiol. This substance is found in the sap of mangos. It causes a severe rash, just the same as poison ivy.

This is because poison ivy also contains urushiol.

Mango allergies are often noticed soon after eating a mango. Typical mango allergy symptoms are blisters around the mouth and severe itching. This usually takes several hours to develop, so you many not realize that your symptoms are caused by a mango allergy.

Some time ago, I wrote an article about poison ivy on this website. It now has many comments about mango allergies, because the article mentions that urushiol is also found in mangos.

Find out more about mango allergy and join in on the comments (or you can add comments to this article if you prefer).

Mango Allergy Management

If you have a mild mango allergy, you may be able to avoid symptoms by washing the mango with soap and water before hadling them.

Do not eat the skin.

Do not scrape the flesh off of the skin.

Avoid the mango pulp near the skin.

If you continue to get mango allergy symptoms, you will have to avoid them completely. Hopefully the above tips will help you continue to enjoy mangos without allergy symptoms.

i ate a mango and i have all

i ate a mango and i have all of those symptoms. it has been 3 days since i ate it and it is just getting worse and worse. i found that iceing it helps a ton. it takes the swelling down and makes it not itchy but only temporaly.
i am also taking benadryl and putting hydrocortizone cream on it but it hasnt seemed to be helping.

Mango Allergy

I developed a.n allergy to mango a few years ago. I get an intense rash around my lips that lasts for weeks. My lips get itchy, dry, flakey and the surrounding area also gets little bumps and redness. it HURTS! I have also experienced the same reaction inside my mouth.
recently i have found that for some reason, 100% jojoba oil lip balm really soothes the rash and itchiness. nothing I take seems to get rid of the rash, it just has to go away on its own, but using this makes it more bearable...
hope it helps.

i have this too!! how long

i have this too!! how long did it last????

mango allergy

I've lived in Hawaii for 26 years and have two mango trees in my yard. One is right next to my bedroom. During fruiting season, my eyes burn like fire inside the eyelids (without touching mangos or eating them). If the trade winds blow a certain way it's even worse. It has really taken years for me to pinpoint when and why my eyes flare up, but I think the mangos are doing it. Anyone else out there have "Mango Eyes"??? I haven't found any way to treat it except to close the windows and turn on the air conditioner, which you don't want to do in Hawaii with the beautiful breezes.

mango allergy face rash

my wife is suffering from the same thing. She ate two mangos, some skin, 4 days ago and 2 days ago. It is not getting better after being on prednisone pill and diph. Anyone have any luck with this? or maybe have an idea when it gets better?

So sorry

I'm sorry your wife is suffering. Unfortunately I've had eruptions lasting up to three weeks. I haven't found anything yet that helps.

mango rash

I have just gotten mango rash. As it is related to poison ivy, my suggestion is that you put ice on it and let the sun dry the ice. Continue to do this throughout the day to dry up the rash. It worked when I had a severe case of poison ivy when other things did not work. I will have to try it for this now. I hope this helps everyone, and God bless you.

don't climb the trees!

not knowing that i had a mango allergy, when i was about 5 years old, i climbed a mango tree. i ended up spending 3 weeks in the hospital covered in rashes and blisters. ever since then, i don't care what people say about it being the skin and sap, i avoid mangoes like the plague!

I look like a monster!

I also suffer from a mango allergy and only discovered it recently. I blamed all my previous reactions on fever blisters or severe chappedness. Honestly, the horrible rash is not only painful, but socially crippling. Nothing I've tried works, even icing it down for and hour at a time won't stop the swelling, no luck with benadryl either. Last time I had eruptions like this they became progressively worse over a period of 2 weeks, leaving depression in their wake.

There must be some pill or voodoo treatment out there somewhere.
Has anyone found it yet?

mango allergy

I am going through that right now. It's taxing on the body and it's been two weeks since i drank the half gallon of Odwalla mango/orange juice. (delicious) Funny you mention the depression that follows because i have been really struggling with depression and anxiety for the last few days. There must be something to it. I found taking a shower and then adding raw aloe from the plant and leaving the skin exposed tends to dry it out. I think it's a waiting game. Atleast if your stubborn like me and don't go to the doctor for some kind of injection.

My sweet enemy

I've been battling a mango allergy for a few years and I've picked up a few tricks, maybe they'll help a bit.
#1. Popsicles are wonderful, especially if you can make some with sugar-free juice (personally I find sugar irritates the rash), crystal light and its ilk work well.
#2. Don't bother with vaseline or other moisturizing lip balms, the heat from the rash melts it and is gets all gross. Get a lip balm with menthol, the cooling sensation works wonders. I found a lovely one in the Philippines with menthol and camphor (this was before I realized I was allergic, THAT was an ugly flare up), I don't know what I'm going to do when my stash runs out :).
#3. When you're applying it; pat, don't rub. Rubbing the rash aggravates it further and makes it take longer to calm down.
Finally, don't let it ruin your life. The rash is ugly and painful, but if you sit at home stewing over it, it will just feel worse, and the depression that follows a week of such stewing is almost worse than the reaction itself. Don't be afraid to explain to people that you had an allergic reaction, people are quite accepting of allergies, and at least a mango is a fairly interesting thing to be allergic to ;)

Thanks everyone for posting here, it helps to know I'm not alone :)

Great advice

Great advice, thanks for sharing

Mangos

I'm 28 now. Had allergies to these wonderful forbidden fruit since I was about 5 or so. It seems to get progressively worse with age and exposure. My dad loves them and can't even eat them any more. He goes into borderline anaphylactic shock.

We had a massive tree that produced the best in the neighborhood and he cut it out. (still angry for that)

I've learned that I can get it on calloused areas without problems. I.E palms of hands and bottom of feet.

I've found that I can eat the fruit without problems and It must be absolutely 100% tree ripe. if it's been picked green and then ripened I seem to have more problems on my skin. My skin has no problem with the ripe fruit, but the tree sap and sap from green fruit give me acid burns. If it's a skin rash, I rap it with gauze and apply plenty of antibiotic ointment. Make sure it stays moist with ointment. If it is allowed to crust, it's the devil to remove the bandages. As to the itchiness, I find a few beers or a few drinks help me. Obviously I'm not condoning pointless drinking, but alcohol is the original panacea. Sleep aid, pain killer, aphrodisiac, muscle relaxer etc.

No matter how you cut it the body has to be given the time to repair itself, two to three weeks. Some times it takes longer depending on the specific location.

There is a special wash specifically for exposure to poison ivy and poison oak. It works equally well for mango sap. As I recall it can also be used to help aid washing the rash. Look around. If you can't find it, E-mail me and I'll see if I can't find an old bottle and tell you the name.(wfduggan --at-- peoplepc --dot-- com) Other than that, know your surroundings and avoid contact to Brazilian peppers as well (also called Florida holly).

One other thing. The puss from the rash itself will cause spreading of the rash, at least mine does, so avoid rubbing the rash on other parts of your body and change wrappings regularly. If you scratch the blisters and they ruptur, wrap it ASAP and control the weeping.

I wonder if the ripeness of the fruit is directly correlated with its toxicity.

Best of luck to you new comers to the MAC (Mango Allergic Club). Hope this may be of help.

Mango allergy

My 3 year old duaghter went to pick some mangos from the tree in our back yard. about an hour later she began showing these brown spots on her face, about 10 of them.
i had no idea what they were. The next morning she woke up and looked like she had been burned with a scolding hot fork.
When i took her to the doctor, she said that she had no idea what it was and had never seen anything like it. My daughter had these indented scabs were the brown spots were.
When i told her about the mango picking she immediately said "thats it!" apparently, mango sap can cause many different kinds of reactions and this is one of them. She didn't even eat a mango, this occured only from standing under the tree. she probably touched the tree or leaves and then her face.
It looks scarry. I hope it doesn't take long to go away, it has only been 2 days.

what you describe is exactly

what you describe is exactly what happened to my daughter this past sunday. she was also standing under the tree. i think that when i pulled the mango off for her to look at it, the sap splashed on her face. she has 15 spots just like you describe. they look like burns. i took her to the doctor today and her pedi recommended i just put neosporin on it and they should clear up quickly. they look a bit better today than they did yesterday. wish i had known and i wouldn't have picked one for her to play with! luckily she didn't put it in her mouth and the spots are only on her face (although that's the worst place, isn't it?).

Rash

It's not so much an allergy, is it, as a reaction? Since we're reacting to the chemical in the oil rather than the mango fruit itself?

I realized I only have the reaction after eating several--I'm not sure if it's because I have a certain tolerance or because I get lazy and eat closer to the peel by the fourth or fifth--but I'm from the Northeast and can't help myself when I find a good shipment of ripe mangoes!!
Last year, before I left Australia, I bought one as big as my head on the Gold Coast. I cherished it for days, holding it up to my face and smelling it (heavenly) before finally eating it. Needless to say, I suffered big time.
But THIS last time was the worst--the juice dripped down my hands and arm, and I didn't wash it off until later. I have terrible blisters on my fingers where my rings were, and even a red, itchy trail down my arm where the juice had been. Come on!! My lips are finally getting better after about five days.
But no, I won't quit. :)

forbidden fruit

I just came back from Mexico and decided to try a bite of my daughter's mango to see if I was still allergic to it. Definately yes< and my nurse friend told me that sometimes the more you eat a food your allergic to, the worse the symptoms get. After one bite, the next day my lips started feeling numb and then the next day they swelled and looked pretty good. My sis told me I should do this every week because I looked like Angelina LOL. The next day it became uncomfortable and I looked like a fish. Now, five days later, I'm still suffering from itchy, burning blisters around my lips. It looks and feels disgusting. The blisters weep. I use tea tree ointment, and it kind of helps, I'm going to try a topical steroid to see if it helps. I'll let everyone know how it works. I'm never going to eat a mango again it's not worth it!!!!

Suffering now:(

I had been eating mangoes since I was a little girl. However, when I reached my forties I suddenly became allergic to them. A few days ago, I peeled and diced some for my friend and didn't even eat it. I must have not washed my hands thoroughly enough and was showing my friends what happens when I eat mangoes and lo and behold, two days later, I am suffering from rashes to my lips, chin, neck and my left earlobe. I used Estee Lauder advanced night repair serum and it helps to calm the rashes. It may be an expensive option for some but at least it provides some relief and reduces the angry rashes.

me too:(

Im definitely staying away from mangoes from now on..I had to go to ER on fourth of July due to severe swelling on my face and neck...I was so shock when doctor said it was the mango that caused the reaction coz of the typical "mango lips" people get ..This is actually my fourth time within a year to have a food allergy and everytime it gets worse ,I honestly taught it was something else that causes the reaction, mango is the last thing I would consider to be the culprit since Ive have never heard anyone allergic to it , its not that common, and mango is my favorite fruit of all time, how can i be allergic to something i always eat..Then I found out that a lot of times the food you always eat are the ones that will trigger a reaction...My doctor said that each time I eat the mango I developed antigens which after some time will make itself known...well it definitely made me aware and from now on im saying goodbye to my favorite fruit... Im just glad that Im not alone :)

Cortisone shot?

So, like the rest of you, I have developed an allergy to mangoes. I started eating them when I was on vacation in Guatemala two years ago and would eat them about every other day with no bad reaction. I bought one on July 3rd and cut the skin off the fruit myself and really enjoyed it - it was perfect! It's hard to find good mangoes in the US.

On July 6th my left eye swelled up, and today my left earlobe is itchy and the space between my fingers on my left hand are itchy. My eye isn't as itchy as it looks, just really swollen. It's only on the left side of my face and luckily (so far) my lips/mouth has been spared.

Has anyone got a cortisone shot for this and did it work? I've gotten the shot for poison ivy rashes and it worked for me, but if it doesn't work for this type of rash I don't want to shot my body full of steriods for no reason.

steroid pack

I had this mysterious recurring rash/hive outbreak around my lips and across my face and didn't know the cause until now. Mangoes! My doctor prescribed a topical steroid cream and a steroid pack (pills that you take, gradually lowering the dose every day). This is the best treatment by far. You can also take Benadryl and Zyrtec which even on its own subsides the itching, although at a much slower pace than the steroids. Staying in a cool room and avoiding any humidity (as this seems to cause the rash to spread for me).

mango rash hurt!!!!!

So i ate a mango on Thursday then on Sunday..I started itching at first we thought i was a heat rash because it is very hot in texas. Well now i have really bad skin it red, itchy, and i don`t know yall got puffy on my cheeks my eyes itch...
How long does this last? I can`t take it.. i try`d ice packs..no help.. its cools it down..How can i get rid of it

Its the peel!

After returning from Mexico a few years ago, I went to the dermatologist with what I thought was some flesh-eating disease on my face. My dermatologist said Mango's are in the same family as poison ivy/oak and I treated it as if it were poison ivy with good, but slow results. Since then I have eaten mango's several times a year with NO problems- its in the peel. You just got to put on gloves, wash the outside with soap, peel all the outside layer off, and then lightly rinse the orange-yellow fruit. Then take off the gloves and enjoy. The only problem is that this past week, I was peeling it and a huge chunk of "meat" or yellow fruit part came off with the peel. For whatever reason I bit it off the peel and now I got a rash on my lips. Resist the urge to bite anything off the peel.

steroid pack works!!!!!!!

I cut up fresh mangos for a salsa I made, ate a little near the skin while doing so and also ate the whole bowl of salsa. The next day, I noticed two tiny clear pimple-like bumps on the lining of my lips. From their, my lips swelled up like a fish with terrible rash with weeping crusting yellow sores.(only near lips) Next day, my whole face was covered in this rash! My face was so swollen and itchy, ran fever, and all my lyph nodes above shoulders were very swollen. The Dr.s in my small town told me it was herpes. They only saw me the first day when my lips only were swollen with sore-like rash. It took 3 or 4 days before the whole rash appeared. After several blood tests, etc., they finally decided it was an allergic reaction to mangos. I got started on steroid pack and special itching cream that instantly started working! I never heard of mangos doing this to someone. Rash looked just like poison ivy. Anyway, has been a week since eating mangos, and almost all symptoms are gone except my eyes still look like I've been punched. I can't believe the supermarkets have those poisonous fruits in eye level of small children!! something should be done!!!

journey of discovery and relief

this is a long story but worth reading; suggestions on how 2 cope & clear it up is in here... I have had assorted allergies for yrs now; I moved to an unindustrialised island 6 mi. off the coast of puerto rico 2 mo. ago;2 escape the rat race... 4 weeks after my arrival,I got what i thought was a heat rash, started in the croock of my arm ;iced it no relief. next day it spread, kinda looked like heat rash mixed with chicken pocks, my boyfriend got the crook in the arm thing the day after me, the 3rd. day it spread everywhere & i mean everywhere(except palms, souls & scalp) it was pink, puffy & itchy & it was unbearable so,we went to the hospital here in Vieques,Puerto rico;it just so happens the doctors here are morons: 1 st. visit i was told i was allergic to shrimp &- given benadryl & medrol iv
stopped itchin for a few hours, 2 days later(day 5) back @ hospital again ,worst than ever;swolen ears and limbs covered head 2 toe with a red/purple rash & the skin in the crook of my arm turned white & flaky on top of the rash; itlooked like fur. i was then diagnosed with Herpies zoster- because my b-friend had the rash too?Although the doctor never saw this before and was guessing. he perscribed meds said it would stop the rash/herpies from spreadin & i would see & feel relief in 3-4 days. ok thats alot to wrap ones mind around but the rash would be done okay great!
NOT!
We don't have herpies just for the record. 4 days later( day9) back again;more benadryl & an over dose of medrol- went into convulsions
& when i asked what medicine they were givn me & why am i jumping like this? the nurse replied" i dont know- i dont know ur condition"
i made him stop injecting it into my iv and ripped the iv out; and they replaced it with saline for 6 hrs. and i was to be discharged??? nothing solved; i took out the 2nd iv & ran for the ferry 2 the main island @ the E.R. (carribean hospital in Fajado,Pr.) spoke to the attending he diagnosed me with atopic dermatitis; he then said he was going to shut down my histamie production all together; now this is how he explaind it to me:
Benadryl goes to histamine receptor #1(hr1)- Tagamet ( yes for upset stomachs) goes to histamine receptor #2(hr2)- these receptors are in each cell of ur flat muscles there is one other receptor that is a back up .if the back up is working also; u will have to change ur diet(mangos however are allowed on this diet) & consume nothing that contains or produces a chemicle called histadine, well i ended up on that diet( low histamine diet-u can find it on google search) & it is not appealin in any way!
he perscribed benadryl every 2 hrs./zantac every 6 hrs/ & claratin 24- every 12 hrs!!! TOTALLY OVA DOSING ON ANTI HISTAMINES also an anti itch medicine 1 every 8 hrs i took them evry 6 /then as needed.
did this for 2 weeks mind you I still don't know what was causing my condition;and I put my self on the diet because the condition was lingering/my b-friend cleared up after a week or so, he didnt have it as bad as I did in the first place -the end of week 5-my skin was peeling off in huge pieces like how a snake sheds; looks like curtled milk & so not pretty. i still got flair upsof the rash/the itch;due to the coconut tree pollan which i believe is what started this hot mess,as I got a break out in the shape of my panties as the clothes line hung under the coconut trees while they were polinating; anyway , i read on line the fury skin & peeling was due to dehidration so **drink lots of water like 2 gallons a day**; histmine production increases when ur dehydrated and consume **lots of vitamin C it eats up histamine ** & stick to the diet ,it works great! (5 going on week 6= now 2 day)I'm still peeling but 3 days passed this week i didnt need the meds/or the diet; the pollan has gone from the coconut trees, but i ate 2 very delicious mangos yesterday & woke up with the rash again all ova my face ( around the nose lips & on my chin ,neck and spots on my arms. Ah ha!THE MANGOS! aaaargh!
I had been eatin them all month-lol didnt think twice about them cause they were allowed on the diet & never had a problem b4...my b-friend wants me to tell you he said it was the mangos for weeks now but i dismissed the notion, any way it seems the sap of a mango tree ,the skin & the flesh closest to the skin contains the same oil compound as poisin ivy- Well, Poison Ivy i know how 2 get rid of so... let me share with u that...hydrogen peroxide patted on it with a cold damp cloth... bath/shower with dawn dish detergent the greese desolver kind it eats oil. & use fresh picked aloe after you wash.
take benadryl & zantac & call the doctor for some prednison & anti itch pills, stay in the a.c. or under a fan- just keep ur body temp down th sun/heat aggravates the rash & stay away from the mangos.
as i will do from now on
note* I found that a stronger peroxide concentrate gets rid of it quicker so i use hair color developer 20 volume u can get in any hair product store or a box of hair dye, use the fresh aloe or aveno after & only leave it on 10 min.@ a time b4 u wash it off. or u will burn your skin. you can do this every 6 hrs or so you will actuall see the offendin oil bead up on your skin pat it dry with a fresh piece of papertowel for every pat ;also a cool shower gives relief and dont scratch it will spred it .sorry it took a story but i almost died from the doctors being clue less, anaphalactic shock = ur organs shuting down. allergies are a serious condition -oh ya the ambulance wouldnt come get me when i called them so don't come here unless it's in the winter & bring ur allergy meds. cause u will have to be ur own doctor & b.t.w. i'm movin back to Boston in 8 days i'll just have to embrace winter At least im not allergic to snow-lol my b-friend says this place is georgous and he don't want to leave but he loves me so he will & if u do come here check out Rana's place on the malacon in esperanza(a no mango zone)- exellent people & food! tell 'em" Titi boo-boo-ha" sent u-lol

mango allergy rash

definitely from the mango skin & sap, terrible rask, try not to scratch, aloe sooths the best, menthol lotions 2nd. takes 1 to 2 weeks to subside, hot showers help release the histamine in your skin and provides relief for an hour or so. If you scratch and get oozing blisters, use medicated baby powder to dry up and heal. The menthol in the medicated powder also provides relief

Great advice

Thanks for the advice, Conan

Swollen Eyes/Mango

...Recently I ate 2 mangos, I had NO CLUE there was any type of reaction...or allergy.
I pigged out getting it all over my face...and dripping down my neck.
Well...the next day I woke up and the whole bottom of my face was red and burning. By the end of the night it spread up to my eyes...and today, my ENTIRE FACE is red and swollen...my eyes are puffy and getting swollen shut. I hve little bumps all over my face, you cant SEE THEM but you can feel them...My face looks like a sausage. lmao....I heard that putting the peel of the banana helped...NOPE. I heard benedryl worked...NOPE...nothing works. It seems like it keeps spreading to...now it is behind my ears, and I think its going to my scalp.
I look really funny....and I feel like absolute crap. Ive been warning everybody ....DONT EAT THE MANGOS!!!! Its a funny story to tell, kinda...cuz nobody knows mangos can do this!!! I DIDNT.

i stopped breathing after eating a few bites of mango

About 7 yrs ago I took a piece of mango out of the fridge and had a few bites. I decided to read and about 30 minutes later my hands and feet started itching like crazy and also had red blotches. It continued onto my arms, stomach, legs and face. I took a benadryl and kept reading, hoping it would go away. Soon I started feeling really weird. At the time I was at my parents house. I told my mom and by that time my face was completely swollen. We went to the ER. By this time maybe an hour or hour 1/2 had passed. In the ER I started vomiting and my body was shaking. Soon I blacking in and out of consciousness. I stopped breathing and they put me on oxygen and an IV for anaphylactic shock. My mom was told I would have died if I didnt go to the ER.
Now I avoid everything mango...juice, salsa, popsicle, candy....everything!! I dont care if its artificial. I carry and epi-pen with me just in case. not fun! be careful out there.

Avoiding mangoes like the plague

Mangoes & cashews actually belong to the same family so if you're allergic to one, you're likely allergic to the other. I had eaten a ton of cashews thinking that they were nuts and were therefore very healthy. Little did I know, I had the worst reaction possible. We're talking giant red puffed up lips and blisters on top of them. My entire lips were covered with these blisters which wept and eventually dried up. I went to my derm and he suggested it was a food allergy or cold sores. He prescribed me some cream and Valtrex to take. During the period which I was trying to recover, I ate some mangoes so I basically signed myself up for more issues. The next time the derm saw me, he asked if I had any cashews or mangoes, that's how we determined that I had a bad reaction to them. It took me 3 full weeks to recover and it seriously made me paranoid. It was such an awful experience and have sworn off mangoes & cashews for life.

mango face

Hey, I just had Mango Face in Hawaii after eating a bunch of mangoes from the trees in the tropical areas. I went to the doc and they gave me a cream slightly stronger than hydrocortisone cream. It didnt really work though, so I took my own initiative to get rid of it. I knew that alcohol dried up poison ivy, though its not good for your skin at all. It worked on this rash too though. If you use Sting Relief (from a 1st aid kit, helps with bee stings), with 6% benzacaine and 40% alcohol, it dries it up intensely and helps with the itch and pain. Any doc or nurse is going to tell you not to do that, but I was desperate to get rid of it and only two applications dried it up enough that just using a moisturizing face cream was all I really needed to make my skin look normal again. It took about a week.

Getting rid of Mango Face

Thanks for the advice on reducing a mango rash quickly!

red itchy eyes from "Mangos?"

My Daughter's father in law has a huge Mango tree and about a month ago we went to visit her and the Mangos were in season. They gave us a huge bag full to take home as my wife & I LOVE them. I was eating them everyday for about 1 wk first washing them off and then cutting them into strips and peeling the skin off as I had read somewhere to eat them this way because of the toxic skin & sap. I never recall having any problems before but for the last week my eyes have been very sore & itchy to the point of painful by nightfall. I do have dry eyes for yrs and use lubercating eye drops & allergy relief drops for outside oak pollen here in FL where it is abunant, but this was more than dry eyes. I was constanly using an eye wash & the allergy drops along with the lubericating ones and still by days end my eyes really were red and sore, no swelling either in my eyelids or mouth. I go to the eye doc next week for my reg checkup and I'm going to ask him what he thinks about it. My daughter gets puffy swollen eyes if she eats too many.
Tom

Too much of a good thing?

Eating too much of anything can cause problems. I wonder if eating too many mangos has sensitized you to them somewhat.

Try avoiding them for a while and see if you improve. You might want to avoid them for a few months, if you find that eating them even occasionally brings back your symptoms. If a few months isn't enough, try a year.

Hope you don't have to give them up entirely!

worst reaction ever

Found I was allergic about 15 years ago. Always got the rash and would even put up with it because I loved eating them. Two days ago i bought a mango for my girls and they loved having a whole cheek each. I tempted fate and had a few little slivers, now this morning I look like elephant woman. It was a slight rash yesterday and now one eye is swollen shut!! I think the allergy is getting more severe as i get older. I used to be able to eat a whole one and just get the rash. I will not have another one now!!! Off to halloween party tonight. don't think I will need a costume. Just the face is scary enough!!!!!

Swelling Face

When I was a kid we had a mango tree in our yard and I used to eat them off the tree all the time with no side effects. When i was 12 i pulled a mango off the tree, washed it and ate it as always and my face and neck swelled up massive! To the point I almost couldnt breathe... i never went near mango's again in any shape of form! A doctor only recently told me its probably just the sap but with the symptom of a swelling throat I dont think i want to risk it again it was pretty scary the first time!

Restaurant Knowledge

My husband and father-in-law have severe mango allergies, both to touch and ingestion. Our son has a moderate mango allergy as well. We have to be very cautious when dining out in the Central Florida area where we live, there can be 25% of the menu items that have some quantity of mango included. My husband develops a severe itch and rash within an hour of ingestion.

What my doc said

I worked wot mangoes a few years ago, got the rash on my legs and arms and after a while even on my eyes. Getting it on my eyes scared me so I stopped working in mangoes, but after a week still no improvement so I went to the doc. He gave me cream (cortisone to dry it out) and tablets (antibiotics and antihistamines). After a week I was symptom free. The doc told me that mangoes are toxic to all people and everyone eventually develop allergy symptoms but we are all have different tolerability and resistance. Working with mangoes and getting the sap and having skin contact with the fruit skin is hence very bad for everyone. The sap burn on the skin (not always visible at first) and rash can submerge weeks after the actual burn in the burned area but scrubbing the area with soap or medical wipes as fast as possible can mild the effect. It is really not the fruit that is bad for us, it is as mentioned earlier the skin and sap, but people with a developed allergy or oversensitivity will react even on the fruit. My doc told me to stay away from mangoes 3-5 years (thats how long time it will still be in your blood stream and make rash and other allergy symptoms visible more easily), including eating them. The greener mango the worse, because of its content of sap. Mango acid is the strongest fruit acid in the world.

This was 2005 and I have stayed away for about 3 years, started eating them last year and I was fine, I thought. Started slow, having someone else cutting it for me or use gloves, not touching the skin. And then last week I had a few to many, eating them directly from the skin and they were yellow but a little green, I was ok until the next morning. Stared with itchy area under my lip, but now a week later I have a rash all over my body. Antihistamines should help, antibiotics for not causing future skin inflammation, infection and cortisone cream.. hope this does its trick.. cause it sure is itchy and I remember last time it took about 3 weeks to get rid of..

Not always the skin!

It's not always the skin. I have had anaphylaxis from eating mangoes peeled by others, and from drinking mango-apple juice. I do react strongly to poison ivy, but not to the severe, get-thee-to-a-hospital level that the fruit does. Maybe I'm just weird. But it's not always the skin, and it's better just to avoid the fruit altogether than to risk hospitalization or death. It's a small price, at least in the U.S. (Interesting to note: urushiol sensitivity rarely fades with time or exposure. Usually, it gets worse.)

Juice may have skin in it

Certainly in your case you're pretty sensitive since like several other people who have commented about mango allergy, you can't have pealed mango either.

As far as JUICE goes, I wouldn't trust it to be completely free of skin!
