You need to be brand-specific

Hi Christine,

You ask a great question.

I would expect the answer to vary according to the brand.

Many brands have a toll-free number you can call to get more information. I highly recommend you contact the manufacturer if possible.

For imported sauces, this may not be possible.

Start by reading the ingredients. I’m sure you know that already.

Next, find out what else that manufacturer makes. If they don’t make anything with nuts in it, then you can assume that the risks of cross-contamination are low.

Note the key words “assume” and “low”. I honestly can’t tell you the level of risk.

If I am able to get more specific information I will publish it.

Please do let me know if you are able to get more definitive answers and I will publish them here.

I have a severe allergy to peanuts and most tree nuts. I am chinese and cooking asian food at home is a chore because I do not know which sauces or ingredients that are asian sauces are safe for me. Can you comment on oyster sauce, plum sauce, 5 spice blends, soy/tamari sauce etc and liklihood that they could have been cross-contaminated in their manufacture process?
