Mold in the House – Can it Cause Illness?

by Allergy Guy

Mold in the house: can it cause illness or allergies?  Depending on the type of mold, the answer is yes.

Certain types of mold can cause numerous health problems, and they may actually cause allergies as well.

Not all types of mold cause problems, then again if you can see one type of mold growing, and it happens to be harmless, there may be other types of mold that cause illness which you can’t see, haven’t identified, or which may start growing in the future.

Most houses have some mold growing in them somewhere.  It is a matter of how much mold is growing in the house.  This depends on a number of things.  Mold needs a damp dark place to grow best.  Some molds grow fine in the light as well.  Air circulation reduces mold growth.

If your house gets a lot of fresh air from outside, the effects of mold will be less, but that does not get rid of mold health problems, especially if you have a mold allergy.

Mold can release mycotoxin into the air, a class of toxins produced by mold.  This is probably the main reason certain types of mold are unhealthy.

Mold spores can trigger allergies for those with a mold allergy.  Mold can also trigger an asthma attack in asthmatics.

Some mold smells bad, and some you can not smell, but this has nothing to do with how dangerous the mold is.  Even mold you can not smell might be dangerous.  Also, not everyone can smell mold very well.

We have a two story house with adobe brick on the bottom. Can mold settle in the adobe brick? We have had our house tested before about 3 years ago and found some mold problems that have been corrected.

Good question! I suggest you locate an adobe brick expert in your area. I would be interested to hear the answer.
