Tired After Eating Bread

by Allergy Guy

More and more people are noticing that they feel tired after eating bread. Here are three possible reasons:

  1. A large intake of refined carbohydrates
  2. You have an allergy to wheat or gluten.
  3. You have an allergy to yeast.

Refined carbohydrates are quickly converted by your body into sugar. This can give you a quick boost of energy, then leave you flat. This is similar to the effect of sugar, but with less severe effects . Your post-bread fatigue could be from this effect, if it turns out not to be the other two.

Reverse Chronic Fatigue

  • Feeling wiped out all the time?
  • Unexplained, ongoing fatigue?
  • Un-refreshing sleep?
  • Severe tiredness?
  • Short-term memory loss?
  • Severe concentration problems?
  • Aches and pains?
  • Headaches?
  • Doctors can’t diagnose or cure you?

If you feel like there’s no hope, no cure, and that you are condemned to live with Chronic Fatigue for the rest of your life, then I have an amazing surprize for you!

You can mitigate this effect by having less bread at a meal, and by having whole-grain bread rather than white bread. A local bakery is more likely to provide truly whole-grain bread. Large bakeries tend to use white flour with a few flour refining byproducts and call the sum of the parts “whole grain”.

Most bread is made mostly or entirely of wheat. A wheat or gluten allergy can have a number of symptoms, including fatigue. This may show up soon after consuming wheat, or it may take up to a day. If you eat bread every day, then you will likely feel tired all the time, although the effect could be even worse shortly after eating bread.

The remedy in this case is to avoid all wheat or gluten products (gluten is in wheat, as well as in barley, oats and rye).

Yeast can really sap your energy as well. If you are allergic to yeast, you will probably notice a similar effect after a small amount of wine or beer (1 glass).

To reduce yeast allergy symptoms, eliminate yeast-containing foods from your diet, and reduce or eliminate sugar.

Good question! If I ever discover the answer I’ll write an article about it.

Often within a few hours after eating bread or white rice I feel exhausted and have no ability to stay awake. I always sleep whether i want to or not, usually for 30 minutes or more, and always awake having drooled. <strange detail about the drool, I know, but it seems worth mentioning because it's 100% consistent. Do you think it could be an allergy or just a sugar spike?

It may be something you’re eating.

The most common foods that can cause this problem are milk/dairy followed by wheat/gluten. So I suggest you cut both of these food groups out of your diet for a couple of months and see if that helps.

I can’t comment on your bladder infection, but sugar does clog up your immune system, and anibiotics, while they may deal with the immediate problem, can make future infections more likely.

You would be well advised to cut back or eliminate sugar, it will benefit your health in all kinds of ways. With any luck it will help with your bladder also.

Hi Dan,
I read your post. Even though it sounds like yeast could be the problem something else to consider is brewers yeast, barley sensitivity and be checked to make sure you don’t have anemia, ulcer etc. Also alcohol is a central nervous system depressant so your body if it is fighting anything, drinking would just compound the problem yeast or otherwise. Sensitivities can bring on headaches. Blood pressure issues, even being overweight. Not to mention the fact that your brain is still growing in your early 20’s and alcohol causes irreversible brain damage in young brains. So if you want to drink, wait until you turn 26 & see if you have the same issue . Sorry to be a party drag but feeling better and healthy comes first .

I am in my early twenties. Just recently, I would start getting horrible incapacitating headaches and have all my energy drained after drinking beer (even half a glass) or eating weet-bix. I thought this could be a wheat allergy, however, I often eat pasta and bread and this seems to have no negative effect whatsoever. The other possibility is a yeast allergy, however, I often drink wine and eat bread with no side effect so may not be this either. Any ideas?

I hope this will help some people out there. I have struggled with bloating, painful gas, IBS, lactose intolerance for years. I have suspected for years that I have a yeast problem as well. I was recently diagnosed with Celiac disease & in a prediabetic state. I am not obese. I weigh 144 lbs. What has helped me the most is to have a test done called an IGg food allergy test. Doctors who do integrative functional medicine are open to it. The information is valuable in determining what foods may be intolerable to my intestines. Many are because of multiple conditions but it helps to know the truth. Pharmasan lab of WI was where I sent my blood serum off to & Neuroscience is their sister company where I purchased the test kit through my doc. I thought I was eating good but I was still poisoning myself. Everything matters – even spices. I hope it help to locate truth for those like me who need to see in black/white what’s causing all the problems.

This started around 3 months ago, if I have white bread for breakfast, then my stomach feels really bloated and uncomfortable. It can last for half the day. But if I have white bread for lunch or dinner, I’m fine.
Am I yeast intolerant?
thanks

It could be yeast or gluten, among other things.

If he is still eating other wheat/gluten-containing foods, then it could be yeast (scratch that if he’s drinking beer and still feeling fine the next day), or just reducing the amount of refined carbohydrates.

What is he eating instead?
