Hi, i had the same experience this past boxing day. I dont drink beer or wine, and thought to have something nice for my anniversary with my husband. I react to alot of things, including alot of medicines and coffee (or coffee products). I had never tried red wine before till this week. I only had a glass mixed with apple juice and my husband had the same thing. I had these sharp pains in my ears after just having a few sips. And after our meal, I had this horrible pain in my stomach. I normally use baking soda and water as home remedy for my stomach pains, but this one time, i drank 3 cans of coke. It helped relieve my stomach pain and ear pains. One thing is for sure, never again will i drink wine again.

When I drink red I get a cough, start wheezing ,as soon as I use an inhaler and take a allergy med ,within half hour my symptoms are gone
I have drank some reds with no reaction so it has to be sulphites or tannins ?

As a wine lover, many years ago I found that I developed severe stomach pain after even a few sips of wine. Of course, loving wine, I have experimented many times over the years, sometimes reacting to some wines, sometimes not. And sometimes not reacting to a wine, yet the next time I try it, will have the same stomach pains. I also get itching deep in my ears and throat. It is just not worth it. I also have the same result with beer, including non-alcoholic beer. I don’t see a lot of people stating they react this way, but I am a nurse and have carefully experimented over the years. Red wine nearly closes my throat as well. Anyone out there have these issues? I typically suffer for about six hours afterwards. My husband had me try a heaping teaspoon of baking soda in a half a juice glass of water, and this actually helped my symptoms resolve much more quickly. Very weird.

I have the same dermatitis condition on my palms and have been wondering if it is from the white wine I drink. I have 1-2 glasses after my kids go to bed. Shelly does not drinking wine still help and are you able to drink other alcoholic beverages?

Alexis, i had exactly the same thing, been drinking red wine for many years, then practically no alcohol for 12 weeks then when i started again, i either get swollen under eyes or a swollen lip after more than 2 glasses of red wine only, which really sucks cause its my favorite. I haven’t been tested at Dr yet but im still playing around with different brands, variety and quality (cost). be very interested how you go.. I”m not sure if its sulphites or histamines..

My throat would become instantly sore and starts to swell and close up (about the same time I became allergic to aniseed with the same reaction) I later experimented and found two Italian wines that didn’t seem to swell my throat at all – Riccadonna Ruby and red Lambrusco (both sparkling and slightly sweet) I wanted to know why they didn’t swell my throat and found out they use a Tuscan grape over there that is designed to be drunk young so that the fruit has less contact with the skin.

Then the store was out of it and they recommended another sweet red wine. I bought it and drank some that night. The next day my face was swollen with deep lines next to my chin and swelling of my cheeks with a rash. The next night, the rash went under my jaw line and down my neck. I thought, it was from the new makeup, I just started. I stopped the makeup and didn’t have any red wine and everything went away. I drank red wine two days ago, and here, I am again with a swollen itchy, lumpy face. Sometimes, it feels like it is on fire. So, now, I know what caused it the red wine! It is worse, this time with lumps and bumps and is really scaring me. I don’t know, when you need medical help with something like this. I never heard of a red wine allergy before, but, I sure have one.

I got the same thing with aspirin years ago, just one eyelid. Doesn’t solve the mystery but definitely does happen.

My eyelid is super itchy. It might be red wine but – here is the weird part -it is only one eyelid. How can that be?

I have always consumed wine, no problem. I did a natural cleanse and was eating clean and decided to indulge in 2 glasses of red wine. The next morning I woke up with severe puffiness under my eyes, they were also red. I thought I had been allergic to a new dryer sheet. It took about 2 days for the puffiness to go away, but the redness remained. About 4 days later I had 1.5 glasses of red wine at dinner, felt fine. Woke up the next day with the puffiness back, THis time it took a day to go away. 4 days later I had 2 glasses of wine, woke up with puffiness. THis entire time I thought it was an allergy to products….. so I threw out my makeup, moisturizers, etc. Finally, I waited till my eyes were back to normal, had 2 glasses of red wine. When I woke up, under my eyes were extremely puffy and red, just as bad as the first time. Its taking a while for this puffiness and redness to go away. I scheduled an allergy panel for next week to get to the bottom of this. I have to wait a week to get the Benedryl/Zyrtec out of my system. Does anyone have any advice?? Is this normal or in line with a wine allergy? What should I have tested? help!
