I'm going on another trip, and as usual, bringing all my food with me.
In the past, I have brought a large bag of granola to supply wheat-free snacking requirements.
As far as celiac goes, there is debate as to whether oats are truly gluten-free and therefore safe, or not.
I am not celiac (according to two biopsy tests, but there is still room for error), so I am less worried about gluten and more worried about wheat. Or anything else that makes me feel lousy for that matter.
An inspiring story left by one of our readers, explains the dramatic effect of eliminating wheat from his child's diet, and how this greatly reduced his child's ADHD symptoms.
Wheat can cause problems that are very hard for a mainstream doctor to recognize. Their training is to look for a set of symptoms, and usually prescribe a patented medicine to alleviate the symptoms. This often does not deal with the underlying problem.
I'm half-way through breakfast.
It suddenly occurred to me that if you are struggling with your gluten-free diet, you might want to know what it is.
I favor whole grains for breakfast. They keep better than any kind of milled or processed food for a start. Choosing between quinoa flakes and whole quinoa for example, the flakes will oxidize and go rancid more quickly than the whole-grain quinoa. Not that quinoa flakes are bad (as long as they are fresh) - its just that the whole grain is even better and will keep longer.
When I first discovered that I was allergic to wheat, it was a terrible blow. It seemed like there was nothing I could eat.
As I got used to it, and discovered more and more new foods I could eat, life got easier. Still, it seemed that the days where gone when I could go into a supermarket, and walk out with a convenient lunch I could eat right away.
Here is Karen's story about how she discovered that she was allergic to wheat:
When I was allergic to wheat my family doctor was on extended leave, the replacement doctor kept telling us I had mono. After several negative blood mono tests, he was still sure I had mono.
I slept for twelve hours at night, as a child the teachers let me sleep in class, at my desk. I complained that they made me walk outside at recess, some days the walk outside was too tiring. Being awakened to eat, and stomach pains to sore to eat, I was sick.
There is finally a sort of first-draft write-up for the food allergy definition on this website. It needs more work, but at least it is a start. The fact is that it has been almost blank for a while, but it does get quite a few page views.
Here are some of the headings in the current version of the food allergy definition:
Yes, I do mention dog food allergies. Dogs get allergies too, as to cats, and probably gerbils too.
Enjoy the read, and as always, feel free to add suggestions in the comments section.
The best way to get Food Allergy Relief is to avoid the food you are allergicto.
Getting allergy tests can be very helpful. An allergy scratch test is not particularly helpful for food allergies.
Allergy medication can help alleviate allergy symptoms over the short term. You can buy an antihistamine over the counter, which helps to reduce certain allergy symptoms.
The recipe section on this allergy site is expanding more lately. If you have food allergies and are wondering what to eat, check out the recipe section here:
I have just added a recipe for wheat-free granola to the recipe section of this website. Instead of making it in the oven, it is made on the stove top.
This recipe is quick and easy to make.
If you consider oats to be gluten-free, then this recipe is gluten-free. It may work with rice-flakes or quinoa-flakes, although I have not tried this. Cooking times may be different for these alternate ingredients.

This event seems to be more about eating disorders than allergies, still it looks interesting and at least somewhat related. Dance performance to explore ways we relate to food will explore the spirit behind this complex relationship.
Eating is one of the most intimate things we do. It can be joyful, complex, excessive or obligatory. It can be nourishment we accept or reject. In Is it Alright...?
This will take place on March 30th and March 31st, 2007. For details, visit the Healthy Sensuality post.
