Wine Allergy

I am beginning to wonder if I may have a wine allergy. I love to drink red wine, but lately, when I have a glass ( and I mean one glass) a couple of hours later my skin becomes red, hot, and itchy. Could I be allergic to the red wine I'm drinking?

yeast or alcohol perhaps

Given the cause and effect relationship you seem to have discovered, wine sounds like it is a problem for you.

It could be grapes, yeast, sulphites or alcohol which are at fault.

See if you notice a connection with any of these on their own. For example, fresh grapes, other foods with yeast in them, mixed drinks.

As for the sulphites, see if you can find low-sulphites wine. If the problem is less or absent, that would indicate sulphites.

I am starting to experience

I am starting to experience the same thing after years of drinking wine, thought....is it the cat, but not always an issue. Beginning to think it's some of the certain kinds of cheaper wines I buy.....

wine consumption and black eyes next morning

After consuming three glasses of wine, I wake the next day with dark circles under my eyes. I have not been consuming any wheat or dairy products for two weeks now. It seems wine may be the culprit. Any ideas on this one?

Wine: Sounds like you have the answer

Sounds like you are pretty much saying that wine causes you symptoms.

I'd have to say that if you don't like the symptoms, don't drink wine (or drink less and see if that's OK).

Also, watch out for the allergens mentioned in the article that actually cause a wine allergy.

Irritant Throat?

I was on holiday and i had a glass of white wine with a meal. This was unusual for me as i usually stick to beer and cider.

After going to sleep for a couple of hours i woke up with a pain in my throat, almost as if i had burnt it. this pain went all the way down to my chest. i felt quite sick as well.

Having drank a lot of ice water i went back to bed, and woke up the next morning with the same feeling. It went on for 2 days after and it was painful to eat and sometimes drink.

I wouldn't have though anything of it. However, last night i was at a party and had a small (half) a glass of Champagne. I woke up this morning with that same feeling (only to a lesser extent, having not drank as much)

Could i be allergic to white wine, or maybe even alcohol in general?

Thanks

Could it be

I had wine for like the first time ever on New Year's 09. On the 2nd, I woke up with an irritated throat. I feel it swollen. Intense headache and the worst fever I've ever had out of two really bad ones in my life.

I have had an allergic

I have had an allergic reaction to something and the 'dessert wine' I drank last night seems to be the culprit?
I woke in the night with a swollen tongue and back of throat and have red allergy patches on different parts of my body - a wee bit itchy.
There is nothing else I have eaten or drunk that could have caused this reaction.
Could it be an ingredient in dessert wine?

Could be the wine but look for other factors

Hi Hayden,

Based on circumstance alone, it could be the wine. But how about other circumstances? For example, if you were at a friend's place, it could be that you were reacting to airborne allergens such as mold or pet dander.

It is also possible that you had a reaction to something else you ate, for example if it had an unusually high level of pesticides.

It could also be coincidental. When I first developed eczema, I didn't know what it was and assumed it was related to something I had recently eaten. It wasn't.

The desert wine you had could have elevated levels of sulphites which some people are allergic too. Although all wines have sulfites (some much more than others) you may only react to the higher level.

In short, it is hard to know. You might try very much less of the same desert wine next time and see if you get a reaction. I wouldn't blame you for avoiding it entirely, but it is more likely to be specific to that desert wine rather than desert wines in general.

I think I'm allergic to some wines, beer and wheat?

Hello,

When I drink some wines it feels like my throat is closing up and I can't drink any more of it because it real hurts and also, when i drink beer the sides of my nose swell up and I can feel a lot of pressure around the bridge of my nose.. I have been to doctors they don't really know what it is wrong and they just give me some kind of spray which doesn't work.

I think I might have this gluten problem because, when I eat foods such as bread, paster and other foods containing wheat I find it hard to go to the toilet.. Also I sneeze loads at once during Winter,Summer day and night and, also I can have itching attacks not all the time properly 3 times out off the months but I can't stop itching all day.

I will be very happy if you could help or give me some advise.

Kind regards,

Nicola

You've come to the right place!

First of all Nicola, my sympathies!

First of all, are you sure that you are allergic to these wine. beer and wheat, or do you just suspect it?

From what you are saying, chances are you pretty much know already, but just to be sure, check out how to do a food elimination test.

Also, you don't want just any old doctor. Some understand food allergies and some don't. I use a loose definition of allergies. Doctors don't appreciate this definition and insist on a much narrower one.

The fact is that if eating certain foods make you sick, then your body reacts to them, and you have to avoid the food, or manage the allergy as best you can.

Find an allergy doctor or, even better, a doctor that specializes in environmental medicine. A doctor like that will understand what you are going through and may be able to actually help you!

You can get more detailed information about avoiding gluten by visiting the Gluten Allergy information product website.

I hope this helps. Once you figure out what to avoid eating you will feel much better.

Yes, it is worth giving up certain foods if it makes you feel that much better.

Oh, one more thing. If you have to give up beer and wine, there are always mixed drinks that might be just fine for you.

Good luck!

strong reaction to white wine

I have a very strong reaction to even the smallest glass of white wine. Even with half a glass I get sick within the hour with violent vomiting and stomach twisting diarrhea. I would like to know what it is in white wine that makes me so sick. It is scary to me to have such violent reaction and not to understand where it is coming from. Red wines are fine, and quality champagnes are fine too. Poor quality champagne will make me sick but nothing like the violent reaction I get from white wine. Roses are a toss, I am never sure how I will react to them, but again never as bad as with white wine. Beer gives me no problems. Thank you for your help.

I also cannot tolerate white wine!

I have the same reaction to white wines. I have no problem with red or champagne, but white gives me horrible vomiting and diarrhea. Took me a while to make the connection. I figured maybe food poisoning, but no one else ever got sick after eating the same food! Cross white wine off my list.

severe reaction to wine

Unfortunately I can't give you any help or advice. I am totally perplexed by the same problem as you have. My reaction usually starts about 8 hours later and is so severe that I can vomit violently up to a dozen times over a six-hour period and be bedridden with severe headache and nausea for 24 hours. I have tried antihistamines which used to help, but no longer. I even have the reaction with red now, as it only used to be white.
Like you I would really like to understand what is happening in my body to cause such violent sickness.

allergic to wine????????

i have always drank wine my whole life, i am in my fifties. tonight we bought a bottle of wine and when i drank it it was very bitter and gave me a metallic taste. i brush my teeth and cant get rid of it. went out and bought a different wine and still got that bitter metallic taste. i let it breathe for 45 minutes. both cabernets both at different stores and still cant drink that without bitter and metallic taste

Give it some time

This is a sad story.

But it does not sound like an allergy, not if your only symptom is a metallic taste.

It sounds like something in your body chemistry has changed - which is hopefully temporary - maybe it is something you ate?

Perhaps you could just wait for a week or two before trying some wine again.

Wine tightens my throat and stomach

Hi, for many years now even a small drink of wine (4-5 oz., or less) causes my throat to tighten up and feel very uncomfortable between 5 & fifteen minutes after the drink. The feeling lasts for 5-10 minutes. In the last year or so, the sensation seems to have moved down focusing mainly on my stomach & lower esophagus. It also is more severe, and I feel quite sick during those few minutes.
Grape juice doesn't cause me any problems, neither does whiskey. I also think that this is only caused by red wine.

Classic allergy symptoms

That sounds more like "classic" allergy symptoms.

yeast or sulfites are the most likely culprits.

But doesn't grape juice also

But doesn't grape juice also have sulfites? Why does that not affect me?
Also , I've noticed that white wine also causes these symptoms, but dry wine (both red & white) doesn't.

Sulfites in Sparkling Grape Juice

Sparkling grape juice may have sulfites. One can't rule out sulfites in regular grape juice - check the ingredients.

Unlike wine, sulfites are not a natural by product of producing the food.

Different wines have different amounts of sulfites. Wines with added sulfites have far higher levels than the natural levels produced by yeast during the fermentation process.

Could I be Allergic?

I just started drinking wine and learning about it. But every time I have a glass of wine at dinner about an hour after drinking it I get sick and throw up.

Is this happening because I'm not use to drinking wine or could I have an allergy to it?

Probably allergic

Hi Lydia,

It is not normal to throw up after *one* glass of wine.

Honestly, it sounds like an allergy, assuming that this has happened on several occasions, and that you have not been drinking a lot of other types of liqueur before or after.

Do you have a similar reaction to mixed drinks? If not, the wine specifically, rather than alcohol in general is a very likely suspect.

It sounds like you are just starting to learn how to enjoy wine. It would really be too bad if it makes you sick.

On the other hand, if it makes you sick, you're better off without it!

I have drank wine for years

I have drank wine for years and always been fine but the past 6 times i have drank it i have ended up being violentley sick even if i have just had one glass of wine. I was wondering why this happens, very sad about it as i have always loved having a glass of wine.
Thanks
Karen

Could it depend on the wine?

Hi Karen,

Your short story is very sad.

Given some of the experiences other people have written about on this page, I am wondering if getting sick after drinking wine happens every time and for all types of wine, or could it be that you have a problem with just some types of wine?

This is an easy question to ask, but I know that it is not so easy to answer, since I'm sure you don't want to get sick trying all different types of wine!

You can start by thinking back to when you were sick after drinking wine and when you were not (over the last six months). Can you see a pattern?

think am allergic to wine : (

Hi. Im a HUGE fan of red wine - i love it. i dont really drink anything else ever and never really drank it for the sake of alchohol - it was the taste. before discovering wine i never really drank. in the past couple of months however - after a glass of wine (started with red but it happening now with white) i get an unbearable sneezing fit and runny eyes and nose. happens about 10mins after the drink and last up to 2 or 3 hours -where i sneeze, have trouble breathing through my nose and have sore runny eyes.
what could be causing this in the wine?is it possible to have an allergy to it after all this time? could it go away. I am so miserable about it - i feel like im going to become really antisocial cos of it as im already allergic to beer (my stomach reacts to it). I wont be able to have wine with meals etc and im going on my hen weekend soon and will feel out of the party if im drinking soft drinks. but the alternative is a weekend of sneezing : (

Sounds like an allergy

From what you describe, it does sound like you have an allergy to wine. Certainly you react to it, from your own description.

Allergies can start at any time in life. No one really knows why. You may have had less obvious reactions that you didn't recognize, or it could have just started one day. Either is possible.

Your best chance of growing out of the allergy is to avoid all yeast-based products for months, it may even take years. Not encouraging, but that's the truth.

You can also try cutting out wine for a month, then trying a very small amount and see what happens.

I have had the same problems

I have had the same problems when drinking wine over the past year, starting with red and now with rose and white. However, I've recently tried some organic red wine and I've had no problems! I recommend you try some!

Wine

I'm curious what Karen meant by being "violentley sick". This has happened to me on 2 occasions, both times happened to be after I had a glass of red wine (on an empty stomach). After maybe an hour I broke out in a sweat and had severe pain in, what I'm guessing, my liver. I mean it hurt so bad I was curled up in pain. The 1st time it happened I was in such pain for about 3 hours that I finally went into the emergency. All they could tell me was that it must have been an allergic reaction. The 2nd time I realized what was happening and immediately took 2 ibuprofen and the pain, though severe, only lasted a short while. Kind of scary. (By the way...I've had this same red wine before and never had a problem.)

Kidney Pain

On 2 different occasions I've gotten sever pain in my lower back, and both times it happened after I had 1-2 glasses of red wine (on an empty stomach). The 1st time it was so sever that after about 3 hours of increasing pain, I finally went to the emergency. All they could come up with was that it was an allergic reaction to something I ate or drank. The 2nd time I realized what was coming and immediately took 2 ibuprofen and that helped reduce the duration of the pain. Both times though, I first broke out in a sweat and the pain was so bad I was doubled over on the floor.

Was this caused by an allergic reaction to the wine? (I've had this same wine on other occasions with no problem. Also, I'm a 47 yr old male, I'm not a big drinker, and I don't smoke.)

Wine allergy

Hi there,

I recently had some white wine [naked grape] i have never tried this type before and have never experienced any issues with any sort of wine. After drinking it, my eyes began to swell and turn extremely red on the top of my eye lips and underneath my eye. Last year these sypmotoms appeared after putting on a certain sort of mascara and only with that mascara. I have been to the doctor and have an allergist appointment in about a month, just wondering if you had any suggestions or comments

thanks!
Jen

allergy caused by cross-chemical sensitisation?

I've noticed with myself that being exposed to one substance seems to cause a reaction to another.

This is an collaborated and completely unscientific theory, but what you are describing in terms of wine+mascara=problem could be an example of this.

Perhaps a more likely scenario is that the mascara is a bit of an irritant, but not enough to notice until you get a bigger reaction from the wine.

I suggest you avoid the types of mascara that make the wine reaction worse - it can't be good for you!

As for the wine itself, there is a wide range of comments on this site about specific reactions to specific types of wine.

Take note of the wines you are OK with and stick to them as much as possible!

wine eye swelling & mascara

I wonder if you are allergice to carrots & apples too? I have the same reactions that you have described above & upon doing some 'google-ing' i fould that often times people's allergies are alike. I read an article that mentioned wine & beer reactions for people who were decendants of the United Kindom & allergic to ragweed- odd I know.

Wine allergy

A nutrition specialist (a doctor) advised me this afternoon that my bloating and increasing midriff bulge are due to the yeast in red wine (as well as an allergy to wheat, mushrooms, soya etc.).

He advised that in terms of alcohol I would be better to stick with gin, vodka or white wine. He says that the yeast is removed from white wine because the grapes are skinned to keep the liquid clear and yeast in fruit resides in the skin (so it's better to peel all fruit before eating if you are allergic to yeast/wheat). It would be better not to drink wine at all because of fermentation but if I insist (I am a red wine fan, and this has been my drink of choice for at years), I should choose white.

Anyone else aware of this?

Thanks.
Mary

Yeast in white wine

I'm not so sure about the doctor's theory about red vs. white wine. They both have yeast in them. True, with red wine it comes from the grape skin, and with white wine usually not.

If you have a problem with yeast, you'd probably be best to avoid wine full stop.

Or have less. I find I can have about half a glass of wine without a problem. For others it may be more or less.

The key is to keep notes of what wine you drink, and how you feel soon after, and every day for the following five days or so.

That way you can work out your tolerance for different types of wines.

Swollen eyes & allergy to specific wines

I have had occurences of an allergy which makes my eye swell up (left eye more than the right) over the past couple of months.

At worst it swells so much that it barely opens, at best just gets a bit red & itchy. A friend was recently horrified after seeing me the morning after a night out, as he thought I had been in a fight & had a black eye.

It recently struck me that there are potentially two factors when ever I suffer from the swelling. One is an Aloe Vera moisturiser, the other is drinking Sancerre white wine.

For some reason it does not happen when I drink other types of wine, but when I enquired what wine we had drunk with dinner it all seemed to fall into place. On this occasion I had not used the moisturiser.

The swelling usually goes after about 12 hours, but has lasted up to 3 days (a pharmacist recommended antihystamines). I now have a floater in the corner of my eye & wonder if this could be related!?!?!

Swollen Eyes

Check to see if you have a food allergy and a dust mite allergy ... I just went through a month of similar symptoms and have figured out that it's the combination of the two that caused Eczema to develop on my eyes. It didn't happen overnight but over a few months of doing it over and over that it developed into Eczema from the swollen eyes. If this is true for you, then manage your food allergies and also the Dust Mites and you should be able to avoid the Eczema (which is insane to have on your eyes).

Good Luck.

red wine headache

The last few times I have had a glass or two of red wine I have woken up early morning with a severe headache between my eyes. The throbbing usually goes away after I get up. I'm thinking that it is with cabs and zinfandels as I used to drink merlots and pino noir's and only had problems if I over indulged. Anyone else have this type of reaction?

red wine headache

I had to stop drinking any wine because of this problem. Maybe you have a problem with the sulfites in the wine? That is what I attribute my problems to. I am also sensitive to preservatives added to food (nitrites, nitrates, etc.)

Tingling in back of jaw

I rarely drink wine. Red wine gives me head aches. White wine I dont mind, but its hard to find one I enjoy.
My most favorite is Ernest & Julio Gallo White Zinfandel. I order this when out for dinner and buy sometimes to have when hosting dinner parties.
After a few glasses I get this weird tingling sensation. I dont know if I'd actually call it tingly... its sort of when you eat something sweet for the first time in the day and the glands in the back of your mouth start to water and give you the "wow" factor??? Does this make sense? Perhaps a type of itch that is hard to scratch?

Only I dont salvitate and it gets tingly and warmish, lasts anywhere from 20 to and hour. I tend to drink lots of water and cleans my mouth with other flavors to keep my mind off it.

I've never felt flushed or feverish. No red blotches or tightness in breathing. My tongue is fine. Its just that spot on both sides of my mouth. In the back, of my mouth. If you reach with your tongue to the furthest tooth back there, thats the spot! Right there inside the cheek area.

I can dink all other types of alcohol, I prefer most of them straight so it cant be alcohol, perhaps the sulfates or fermentation process? What do you think?

P.S. I also get this from overly ripe Pineapple...

Sulfites in other things besides wine

Sulfites are also found in beer (or any other fermented beverage), and is often used as a preservative.

See foods that contain sulfites for a list.

Fresh pineapple is not one of them.

If you don't have a reaction to those other foods then you can probably rule out sulfites.

Wine Beer and mushrooms

Throat tightens and filled with mucous and pains with difficulty swallowing, breathing when I drink wine, beers, and sauteed mushrooms. What do these have in common?

Sautéed mushrooms?

Sautéed mushrooms? Not sautéed onions or raw, boiled or baked mushrooms?

only have noticed a problem

only have noticed a problem when the mushrooms are sauteed in butter and garlic

Wine, beer, mushrooms

Sounds like intolerance to fungus/yeast. I've had this problem for a while, combined with other digestive and breathing problems. Cutting out all alcohol, wheat, yeast, sugar, fruit, unpeeled nuts and certain types of vegetables helped. Anything that could cause fermentation and yeast build-up, Candida Albicans. I think there definitely is a connection between mushrooms and wine/beer.

Two allergies?

Maybe you have two allergies. I can't think what wine, beer and sautéed mushrooms have in common. On the other hand, it is odd that sautéed mushrooms, rather than, say sautéed onions would be a problem.

If i think of something, I'll let you know. Maybe another visitor will have some ideas for you.

Wine and swollen eyes?

Hi, I think that I may have a wine allergy. Last night I had five or six sips of my husbands wine and this morning I woke up and my eye lids and all around my eyes were, and still are quit swollen. Could this be the wine?

Sudden red wine allergy?

After Thanksgiving dinner, my belly started to itch furiously and the T-zone on my face broke out. It seemed like an allergic reaction, and I had been drinking a beaujolais nouveau. The next night, I had a glass of the wine in isolation - not eating or drinking anything else - and it happened again. The night after, I tried a syrah, and it happened again, only not as bad. Then tonight, I didn't drink any wine but my neck, jawline and again my belly started itching. Only then did I remember that I'd poured a little malbec into the beef stew I made.

Could I have suddenly developed an allergy to red wine? I'm 43 and I've been drinking it my whole life and have never noticed this kind of reaction. The night before the first incident, I drank a half bottle of cabernet with no ill effects at all.

If this is an allergy, is it possible it will go away if I lay off the wine for awhile? I have no other food allergies, though three years ago I did develop rather severe seasonal allergies.

Thanks.

Allergic to Alcohol

I have been allergic to alchohol all my life, but continued to drink with with benadryl as an aid to the allergic reactions that I would get. I knew that it wasn't good for me to continue to drink wine but I enjoyed it so much. I recently had a tumor removed in my instestine, and know what.......I am not drinking ANYMORE. It can't be good to drink things that your body is telling you to stop.

I agree

Not only was the alcohol bad for you, given your allergy, but I bet the benadryl was too.

Medications are not good for you, they only cover up the symptoms.

Good for you giving it up completely.

Some alcohol is fine for most people, but unfortunately you are one of those people who must cut it out entirely.

anyone else get this when drinking wine?

Hi, I noticed that among all the varied symptoms people have when drinking wine, their jaw does not tighten.
This has only started happening to me since moving to California, and it doesn't matter where the wine is from or what color it is. Before I'm 3/4 of the way through my first glass, my jaw tightens on both sides where the upper and lower jaw connect. Does anyone else get this? Or even heard of this happening when drinking wine?? If so, does anyone know what actually causes it?

grapes?

When I was younger and I would eat only a handful of raisins I would feel somewhat nauseous. I also couldn't drink cranberry juice, grape juice, apple juice, or any other fruit juice other than lemonade and orange juice. I could, however, drink red wine. Suddenly, around the age of 21 when I would have only one glass of red wine (or white wine as well) I would have to race to the bathroom and hang out in there for at most an hour or so. It really messed up my lower intestine. At dinner once I had only half a glass of white wine and it made me incredibly nauseous and sick and I had to throw it up. I say it's an allergy, but I'm not sure to what. I can eat grapes and I can now eat raisins without feeling a little sick. My body is sensitive to alcohol compared to other people, but it's just odd that when I could drink wine before, now it really damages my stomach/intestine/whatever.

Is that called an allergy?

Adverse reaction - maybe an allergy

It certainly sounds like you have an adverse reaction to beer and wine.

It is hard to tell if what you have is the classic definition of an allergy, but it sounds like it meets the very lose definition used on this site.

white wine new allergy?

I have recently discovered I am allergic to wheat. so stopped eating it.

I have now on 3 occassions been violently sick following drinking white wine. I usually have a glass of white at night on about 5 out of 7 nights. OVer the festive period I have had a few nights of drinking a few glasses and was really sick with severe pain in my stomach and lower back.

since then a have had a couple of sips of wine with no ill effects BUT the wine tastes vile (a bit like soap!)

It sounds silly but I will be gutted to stop drinking forever.

I don't enjoy spirits and can't drink beer because of the wheat allergy.

Is there any wheat in wine and could this be causing the problem? Thanks

No wheat in wine

I've never heard of wheat being added to wine, and I can't imagine why.

Still, anything is possible, so let's just say it is highly unlikely.

If you are allergic to wheat but not gluten, you might be OK with barely, which is what beer is often (but not always) made from. So you may be OK with some types of beer. There are also gluten-free beer's available.

You mentioned white wine, what about red wine?

reply

hi

thanks for answering

red wine has always made me flush - I get bright red cheeks as a result so never really drink it.

White wine also has started to make my joints ache almost immediately.

No Fun

It's just no fun when such a wonderful drink as good wine makes you feel like that.

Hope you can find something you like to drink that doesn't have these bad effects on you.

Allergic to white wine?

I have drank small amounts of white wine over several years with no ill effects, but lately when I do have a glass of white wine I get itchy all over, even in my hair. Tonight I had one glass and shortly thereafter I had a most unusual "event". First I felt super tired, and just wanted to lie down, I don't remember much of sitting down, but was chilling, so my husband covered me with a light blanket. I covered my head with a sweat shirt hood and immediately went to sleep. I guess in about 15 minutes I asked my husband for some milk as I felt I was having somekind of reaction. The milk helped. It took about an hour to feel normal again. I do have many hive type of reactions mostly to medications and many foods, and am gluten intollerent. Do you feel that this could be a wine allergic reaction?

Wine allergy - sounds suspicious

What you describe sounds very much like you are reacting to wine - based on circumstantial evidence.

If, every time you drink white wine, you feel ill effects, I suggest you cut out white whine completely for at least several months and verify that you don't have symptoms.

Also, it sounds like the effects are getting worse - which is a worry.

Do you have an allergist or a doctor that practices environmental medicine? You really need to see a doctor about this - not a GP but an expert who understands allergies, intolerances, delayed food reactions, the whole big picture.

Wine Allergy??? My Symptoms Appear To Be Different...

Approx. 24 hours after I drink wine, my entire body become sensitive to touch. I would say muscular soreness, but it's not the kind of hurt that feels good to massage...rather it hurts to touch anywhere on my body...head to toe. This appears to happen even if I drink just one glass of wine. I thought that it happened with all alcohol, but I recently went on a vacation and had only mixed drinks, and an occassional beer, and this did not happen. It also did not happen when I was younger and would have been drinking mostly beer then. I tend to drink mostly white wines. Anyone else have this issue?

Cause and effect

Hi Lisa,

It sounds as if you might doubt the connection between wine and your sensitivity to touch.

The funny thing about allergies and sensitivities is that a group of people can have a reaction to exactly the same food, but all have a different reaction.

This seems to be especially true for delayed reactions.

Rather than trying to match a set of symptoms to a specific allergy, you really have to go on cause and effect: "when I drink wine, my entire body becomes sensitive to touch about 24 hours later". These symptoms may be unique to you, but the fact that drinking wine can cause an unpleasant reaction, not related to alcohol, is all too common, as you can see from the number of comments here.

white wine and cider allergy

I have drunk white wine for many years. Since having my daughter 20 months ago, on the few occasions that I have started to drink it again I have an allergic reaction. First my face, neck and chest area starts to burn and turn bright red, then I start to get palpitations. I tried a glass of cider and the same thing happened. It literally takes 2 - 3 sips before I start to burn up!!

Same

Hi, the other day I had two glasses of white wine (I admit, a pretty cheap one), and the exact same thing happened to me. I felt awful and had extremely hot red blotches all over my back and a bit on my chest, as well as being swollen and red on my cheeks... I was wondering if you have tried other types of alcohol to see what affects you? is it only wine? I'm a bit afraid to try anything else incase the same thing happens again. thanks!

red tingly lips after certain wines (some red & Zinfandel)

My lips don't swell, but get very tingly, dark red and wrinklier than usual. I think it's the White Zinfandel I had which was very sweet and pink...I woke up the next morning w/my lip problem and it's been three days!! What's up? Is it the sulfites?

Need more info

It could be a number of things, Lisa. It isn't possible to tell from the symptoms, as everyone seems to have a different reaction.

Sulfites are also found at high levels in many dried fruits.

It could also be grapes, or yeast. Given that many people seem to have reactions to specific wines, it could be something else as well.

Have you noticed this problem with any other kinds of foods?

Wine and flushing / temperature rise

I have been drinking wine for years and I my nose would normally turn red (like my mom's) but otherwise all was well. Over the past few months, after as little as a sip of wine, I flush all over to the point where my hands swell and become red. This happens with all brands of both white and red. It does not happen with grape juice, grapes, other types of alcohol or wheat products. It happens any time - before, during and after dinner or in the evening. I usually only have a glass every day or two.

I love wine and can't imagine removing it from my diet. So far the symptoms are not so extreme that I feel the need to stop drinking, but I'm curious if anyone knows why this would happen so suddenly and what the specific root cause might be (and of course, if there is anything I can do about it).

This also happens to me now

This also happens to me now after drinking wine for many years. I spoke to the doctor about it and he said I was hypersensitive to alcohol! Nothing to do with sulphites or grapes etc.

Wine & Chest Tightness

I have been drinking red wine for years...I used to drink cabernets, but since having my daughter 2 years ago, I can't drink the "strong" stuff...I'm now drinking pinot noir once in awhile. The past few times that I've had a glass or two of red wine, I sometimes feel a little tightness in my chest. When I go to sleep, and wake up in the morning, I will have a cough stemming from my chest...kind of like when you have that annoying cough when you have the flu where you just breath in a little, and it starts a cough attack...so after wine now, when I wake up in the morning, when I breath in, I start this chest cough.

Is this an allergy?

See a doctor

Sorry to hear about the symptoms you seem to be having after drinking wine.

I can't say for sure if that is an allergy or not. It sounds like it.

It sounds like you have found a cause (wine) and effect (unpleasant symptoms).

Best you see a doctor, preferably an allergist.

Until then, best to avoid wine.

Probably not what you want to hear, but I'd hate to find out that your symptoms became worse over time ...

Allergic to wine but not champagne

My wife, is allergic to wine. 1/8 glass or even something cooked in wine causes vomiting and nausea for at least a few hours, but she can drink champagne wihtout any issue. Can anybody help us understand what it is that is causing her reaction to wine?

Am I allergic to wine?

I used to have a glass of wine on occasion with my friends (usually red wine) until a couple of years ago. Two years ago I had a couple glasses of wine one night and I got really sick. I was dizzy and sick to my stomach. My friends and I just assumed that I reacted that night because I had more then the typical one glass and because we used both a cheap white and a red and at one point combined a glass of the two together (not sure if that was wise or not). Ever since even the smell of wine has made me nauseous.

After two years of staying away from wine other then a sip here or there, I decided to try having a glass of red wine last night. Usually, i can tell whether or not it will make me nausea from the start because some are worse then others, and last night the wine we had tasted a little better then most. So I poured myself a very small glass. I hardly had any and I was disoriented and feeling sick. My stomach ended up bloating really bad and all i wanted to do was sleep. My friends gave me an allergy pill which helped my mental clarity but it did not help the bloating. After a couple of hours the inside of my stomach felt like it was on fire. eventually the stomach pain disappeared but it was a horrible feeling and I am back to feeling nauseous even thinking about wine.

Am I allergic to something in the wine??

wine-coughing-yeast buildup??

When I drink a few glasses of wine it seems that the next few days I cough a lot- no cold going on - allergic? or is there anything to possible yeast buildup causing this. I heard something on tv regarding this- I once went about 3 days without any =cough went away and then started drinking wine again and the cough came back.Anyone with definite info would help

Stomach cramps from wine

Over the last 12 months I get stomach cramps and diarrhoea the day after drinking rose wine and white wine, and more recently pimms. I've never had any problems with red wine and can drink that reguarly, but even if I have a quarter of a glass of white or rose I have bad stomach cramps the next day but feel OK at the time of drinking. It's a very distinct pain. Is there any other alcohol I should avoid, do these 3 have something in common?

Some answers....

Like several of the people here, I sometimes have allergic reactions to some wines (I definitely have asthema so I guess that means I'm susceptable)

1) Worst; are sweet whites, cheap champagne (is there such a thing!), some beajolais, some cheap dry whites. Reds are generally ok.

2) The culprit is Sulphites (sulfites) which are added to the wine to halt fermentation & stabilise the wine. Essential in sweet whites to stop the sugars fermenting, often used in cheaper wines to control/ stop the fermentation & preserve the wine. I believe that better quality (more pricey) winemakers try to reduce use of sulphites because they are detectable as a 'fault' by wine snobs.

3) As I understand it - in my case it brings on a histamine reaction. But very seriously it can in some people bring on a loss of blood pressure which might be why some people keel over - time to talk to a Doctor !!

4) The good news - is that the better wines, especially reds, are 95% OK for me. My advice is be careful with your brands, drink less but drink better stuff!

Cheers!

Good advice

Thanks for explaining how sulphites are used in cheap wines.

I agree with your advice: quality rather than quantity!

reaction to white wine

Years ago i noticed when ordering a house wine at a club i would have strange feelings after the one glass, now years on it has worsened and the feelings are more severe my whole face goes a strange numb but tingly feeling (or lack off). i find this mostly with white wines and some champanges, i was able to drink a pink champange but every now it is reacting with me after 2 or more glasses. i aslo get lots of headaches, a get a sleepy sick feeling after a glass of white wine. I tried a New Zealand white wine and the reaction was the worst i have ever had my face went tingly, numb, headache and even though i could not see any swelling i had trouble talking if felt like my tongue and throat were swollen, i also felt like i was drunk or druged just 3/4 way through the glass. i stopped drinking it so i am not sure what would happen if i had a few glasses. do you think i have a sulfate allergy and is it worth seeing a doctor?

cheers Tanya

Allergy to Sulfites

A sulfites allergy is possible, and it is worth looking in to.

Sulphites are found in other foods, for example dried fruit, so it is worth finding out more about.

A doctor may be helpful. Many only to believe in "classic allergy symptoms", so just keep that in mind. Having said that, it is worth mentioning to your doctor, see if you get any help.

If you find wine has this effect on you, I'm afraid you will have to drink less than the amount that causes a reaction, and avoid the worst types that cause the biggest reactions.

allergy to wine?

I have thought for a while that I might have an allergy to certain wines. I will have a few sips and my throat gets very mucusy, a bit tight and feels very uncomfortable. I can't even finish one glass because it's so uncomfortable. This also happens with some beers and raw vegetables. I don't remember having this problem with reds, just white wine and champaign. The frustrating thing is that I could drink the same variety of wine, but only certain brands will have this effect, so I don't know which types of wine to avoid.

Which types of wine?

Lauren, it would be well worth your while keeping track of which types of wine cause this reaction. You said some vegetables as well, that is also taking note of.

If you remember some of the wines, maybe you could add to the wine survey.

Thanks!

Pos.wine allergy

Has anyone ever had swollen lips from drinking wine.My mouth also seems to thicken on the inside.I have never been allergic to wine before.I am in my early 50s. It usually happens about 6 hours after drinking just 1 glass of wine [ red ].

wine allergy

I normally drink a white wine, usually from Australia or New Zealand. I am finding that it gives me a terrible headache, makes me extremely fatigued the following day, sort of light headed and and weak. It makes the skin on my face, around my nose itch severly, I sometimes sneeze and my sinuses get very stuffed up. Often times it also causes intestinal issues, cramping etc. It doesn't happen every time I have it but more often than not, I feel very bad the following day. Can wine cause skin itching?

Wine allergy causing itchy skin possible

Hi Sue,

Sorry to hear you're getting these symptoms from drinking wine.

As you already know, wine can cause allergies in some people for a variety of reasons.

Allergic reactions can have a wide range of allergy symptoms, which depend more on the individual than the allergen.

So yes, it is possible that wine can cause itchy skin.

Have you noticed a difference if you try different types of wine, and different brands?

Red wine causing stomach upset??

Hi,

thanks for all the answers...its given me more light to what I might be suffering from. Like most people, I have been taking red wine before with no effects at all but lately I've been throwing up every single time I take red wine and have bathroom issues as well. Plus my forehead is breaking out...am not sure if this is related to the wine. How is it possible that this could be happening now after several years of having no problem at all?? It is very disappointing as I do enjoy my regular glass(es) of red wine. Should I switch to white wine or just go back to vodka/gin & tonic. Thanks. Doris, Nairobi, Kenya.

Allergies come (and sometimes go)

The thing about allergies is you aren't born with them (usually), you develop them.

They can hit at any time in life, and are often to things we are exposed more too.

That is why we often become to our favorite foods.

If you try white wine, you might find you are OK with it, or you may find you are not. It is up to you if you want to take that risk. If so, try just a sip one night, a but more another time and see what happens.

You may find that giving wine a rest completely is a good idea. Your system might re-adjust.

It is also possible that rather than an allergy, you have other health issues, and have become sensitive to alcohol. So be careful with the vodka/gin route until you are sure.

Good luck!

Swollen, cracking, & peeling Lips

I work at a Wine Shop and I am constantly tasting different types of wines. I have noticed lately that my lips seems to swell, are dry, then crack. (almost tiny blisters on the edge of my lips) Very Painful...feels like my lips are sun burned. (for almost 6 weeks now) I have increased my water intake but can't excuse that the sulfites might be to blame. I am a moderate wine drinker and have been for several years. I am trying to challenge myself to not drink for a week and see what happens when I do sip. However, may be extremely hard since I have to test/try at work. Suggestions or thoughts?

Itchy blotches on legs and arms

Recently after going to a wine festival i woke up with big itchy red blotches around my ankles. These soon started breaking out on my arms. The dr. said maybe poison oak?? I have never in 53 years of life had poison oak. I am thinking maybe the wine. I drank scupponine and muscadine at this event. The cordisone shot and the cream prescribed have not made this go away completely and now i notice i am breaking out with new places after i drink a glass or two. Do you think this could be an allergy to wine? At the festival i also participated in the "grape stomping" event where we stomped either muscadines or the scupponines. After this, i immediately washed off my feet and ankles with soap and water. So i am puzzled by this.

Link cause and effect

Doctors usually use the following thought process to diagnose disease: "this set of symptoms matches this particular disease, therefor you either have the symptoms for a given disease, or you don't"

This works for diagnosing certain conditions, but it sure doesn't work for allergies!

For allergies, I suggest you link cause and effect, and consistency.

So if every time you drink wine, you break out in blotches, then I'd blame the wine.

Is this an allergy? Well, it certainly appears, through circumstantial evidence, to be a reaction to wine, and therefore possibly an allergy.

If all wine does this to you, you may have to try avoiding wine for a while and hope your body resets itself.

Good luck with it!

pinot grigio and pain

I became aware... like a lightening bolt, it's the white wine causing my ankles and feet to feel like they would like to fall off! The joint pain becomes so bad, I can hardly walk. This is after sipping pinot grigio while visiting or watching a little TV. I am 67 years old... I was beginning to think, things really do go south after sixty, but now I am blaming my drink of choice. I surfed onto this site after putting my symtoms on Google. Yes, I do believe our body will tell us what's wrong. We just need to listen. I will try another brand of pinot grigio and if it continues, I will just not indulge. It isn't worth it...

Hives from red Wine?

I have been a lover of red wine for years, but over the last two months I've been suffering from hives on my the backs of my hands and occasionaly around my ankles. I thought perhaps it was from contact with a new detergent, but after not drinking red wine for a few days the hives are gone. I will be heart broken if I can no longer enjoy a glass of Malbec. Note that I've also changed detergent. Can red wine actually be the cuprit after all these years?

Could be but not certain yet

I understand your distress at possibly having to give up something you love.

From your description so far, it looks like wine might be the culprit. But it isn't certain.

The only way to know is to see if the hives come back again if you have some wine, and go away if you stop.

It could be an allergy to something like yeast, in which case, you might be OK if you have less wine and cut out other yeast-containing foods like bread and grapes (at least, cut them our or reduce them on days when you plan to have a glass of wine or two).

Good luck!

Wow...All These Years I Thought I Was Alone

As a younger woman, I loved drinking a variety of wines and was beginning to learn about the history of wine and develop a palate for wine tasting. At age 28, when my first child was just a few months old, I made a chicken dish one evening that called for white wine in the sauce. The remainder of the bottle (about 1.5 glasses each), I shared with my husband. It was the first time I'd had wine since before I was pregnant; I was enjoying it when the phone rang, and I went to answer it. Suddenly, I felt extremely drunk, dizzy, and nauseous. I was holding the baby and he was squirming in my arms, when to my horror, I DROPPED my child! Luckily, he was fine (and is now a strapping young man of 19), but I spent the rest of the evening violently throwing up, with hideous abdominal cramps and diarrhea. After several more incidents of drinking wine that ended in the same miserable and distressing state (think severe food poisioning reaction--once after one glass of champagne, I was dangerously dehydrated and too weak to get up off the bathroom floor), I finally learned from my younger brother that his doctor diagnosed him with a sulphite/wine allergy (his landed him in the hospital for three days.) So, I figured I wouldn't take anymore chances. It's been nearly two decades now and I dearly miss wine, but I'm wondering if there might be something else in it besides sulfites that causes my reaction? I eat dried apricots and other foods that use sulfites as a preservative and have never been ill from them. I also have eaten beef burgundy and wasn't sick (the chef thought perhaps it was because he made it in such large quantity, that there was less wine in the sauce proportionately---but ahhh, the lovely smell of the wine.) And I eat grapes and raisins and never have a problem. Whatever the cause, as much as I miss wine and am curious whether or not I still have an allergy, the risk of becoming so hideously ill again prevents me from pouring myself a glass. I'm a bartender and drink beer and white distilled spirits with no consequence, but I steer clear of wine, champagne, vermouth, and brandy. I'm glad I happened on this website. It's good to learn I'm not some freak with a rare allergy! I'm grateful I don't have a gluten allergy like my best friend...I've lived without wine but life without bread and pasta...no way!
